composing a foreground for a rooftop view

The design of the Academic Roof Garden imagines a roof garden as an extension of the interior spaces of a rooftop addition. Layers of shrubs and small trees add depth to the view above the formerly industrial rooftops of Soho.

Built to house heavy manufacturing machinery, the building’s structure has the capacity to support substantial soil volumes, allowing for a substantial rooftop garden. The plant palette is designed as a sequence of visual events which cycle through the academic calendar from September through June, providing an amenity for staff, students, and university neighbors.

In collaboration with Ennead Architects.
