composing a foreground for a rooftop view

RAFT worked with Ennead Architects to design a roof terrace that imagines the garden as an extension of the interior space. Layering shrubs and small trees creates depth and a seasonal foreground through which to view the skyline and enhance the romance of New York City. The roof setback becomes an amenity for staff, students, and university neighbors.

The building's manufacturing past gave support to the roof structure to accommodate additional soil, allowing RAFT to expand the planting beyond typical greenroof sedums. The plant palette is designed as a sequence of visual events that cycle through the academic calendar from September through June.
