transforming a garden into a cultural destination
COOPER HEWITT SMITHSONIAN DESIGN MUSEUM
The historic, originally built for Andrew Carnegie, was constructed for residential use rather than as a thriving civic space. RAFT developed high performance turf, suspended pavements, and engineered soils to allow the landscape to support the increased visitorship and new programming targets for this cherished garden. The reconstruction included realization of The Rockery, an incomplete feature from the original Schermerhorn design. RAFT composed this feature in the field using Manhattan schist boulders salvaged from the site.
