supporting the shift from soldier to sustainable farmer
Heroic Food is a non-profit organization dedicated to preparing military veterans for careers in sustainable farming in a veteran-supportive environment. Their mission addresses both the aging population of farmers and high unemployment of young military veterans by connecting veterans with mentor farmers to gain hands-on experience. RAFT worked with Ennead Architects to masterplan the organization’s 20-acre property in Hudson, NY where the veterans will live during their two-year training.
The goal of this space is to provide a supportive home that fosters community and reintegration. Central to this goal is encouraging veterans to participate in communal life while also providing them with the ability to get away. The transitions between personal space and the public realm are rarely a hard line. By considering how physical elements of exterior space—plantings, walls, grade changes, etc.—work to define thresholds, the design of the landscape can be simple without being mundane; articulated but not overwrought. Residents can be engaged without feeling overwhelmed and secure without feeling isolated.
