establishing a healthy agricultural estate
RAFT’s design for Red House transforms this historic farmhouse and barn complex into an ecologically productive estate garden. The design provides an intimate foreground from which to feel the soothing expansiveness of the property. A woodland garden embeds the central court within the native ecology. Fieldstone boulders lead to a gravel and stone terrace overlooking the broad vista across flowering meadows to the wooded horizon.
The design replaces a more polite shrub and perennial garden, imposing wilder seeded meadows and restored native woodlands. A rain garden of wetland perennials receives stormwater runoff from the pavements and rooftops. The landscape enriches habitat for birds, butterflies, and bees that are beneficial to the orchards and organic kitchen gardens.
